Biffa, a major player in waste management, has strategically acquired Keenan Recycling, an Aberdeen-headquartered company renowned for its extensive food waste collection services. This acquisition underscores Biffa’s commitment to enhancing its food waste collection capabilities in anticipation of rising market demand and regulatory changes driven by the new Simpler Recycling legislation. The regulation mandates the segregation of dry recyclables and necessitates separate food waste collection, a move Biffa is now better equipped to handle.
Founded in 2003, Keenan Recycling has built a strong reputation for providing food waste collection services to businesses, waste management firms, and councils throughout England, Scotland, and Wales. The company is not only a collector but also manages a composting and biofuel facility, contributing to a sustainable waste management cycle. With its fleet of 80 collection vehicles, powered by both diesel and HVO fuel, Keenan has implemented advanced route optimisation and bin weighing technology. This technology reduces carbon emissions and enhances operational efficiency, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to environmental responsibility.
This acquisition is part of Biffa’s broader strategy to fortify its sustainable waste management portfolio. Recently, Biffa has completed acquisitions of L&S Waste Management, Hazrem Environmental, and Renewi’s UK municipal business. These moves are aimed at bolstering Biffa’s capability in managing various waste streams, including construction, hazardous, and household waste. The addition of Keenan Recycling to its portfolio significantly enhances Biffa’s ability to address food waste challenges effectively.
Maxine Mayhew, Biffa’s Chief Operating Officer for collections and specialist services, expressed confidence in the integration of Keenan Recycling’s expertise. She stated, “Keenan Recycling has built an outstanding reputation as a leader in commercial food waste collections, and we’re delighted to be welcoming the expertise of 140 colleagues into the Biffa family. By integrating Keenan Recycling’s offering with our wider infrastructure and resources, we see tremendous potential to enhance our ability to meet the requirements of Simpler Recycling legislation.”
Grant Keenan, the Managing Director of Keenan Recycling, remarked on the future potential under Biffa’s ownership. He affirmed, “We’re extremely proud of the remarkable growth we’ve achieved over the past 20 years. Biffa brings a wealth of expertise, infrastructure and resources for accelerated growth, and we are confident this acquisition will take our business – and the UK’s food waste recycling efforts – to the next level, helping to further reduce environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future.”
Biffa’s acquisition of Keenan Recycling represents a strategic enhancement of its food waste collection services in line with evolving market and regulatory demands.
