Asda’s latest Christmas advertisement introduces a team of gnomes as central characters, reflecting their increasing popularity among shoppers. Over the past four years, the retailer has sold more than 100,000 festive gnomes, which inspired their new marketing direction. The cinematic advert opens with two Asda staff members facing a challenging snowstorm, pondering their strategy for holiday preparations.
In a creative twist, a gnome’s nose is pressed, lighting up and alerting gnomes nationwide. These ceramic characters, named Max, Gnibbles, Gnorma, Gnicky, and Gnarla, rally across gardens, pub shelves and tower blocks to render assistance. Adopting the theme from The A-Team, these gnome commandos bring an energetic and humorous element to the narrative.
Upon their arrival at the Asda store, the gnome squad industriously convert the area into a Christmas spectacle. The advert subtly incorporates numerous Asda products available during the festive season, from ‘Exceptional’ mince pies to a gingerbread gnome. Additionally, fashion items such as a George ombre sequin dress and unique culinary offerings like penguin bao buns are artfully presented.
Max, the chief gnome, marks the conclusion of the store’s transformation by declaring, ‘It’s time to go Gnome.’ The team then sets off in Asda’s delivery vans, backed by an adapted version of Chris Rea’s classic holiday tune, reimagined as ‘Driving Gnome for Christmas.’ This creative adaptation enhances the festive spirit of the campaign.
Asda’s approach highlights a strategic focus on familiar seasonal favourites, merged with innovative storytelling, to capture consumer interest. David Hills, Asda’s Chief Customer Officer, emphasized that the gnomes were an obvious choice for the campaign due to their long-standing appeal, aiming to offer customers quality diverse holiday products under one roof.
Asda’s gnome-themed Christmas advertisement cleverly combines popularity and innovation to create an engaging festive campaign.
