In an effort to draw British tourists throughout the year, the Algarve is expanding its attractions beyond the conventional beach and golf offerings. As André Gomes, the president of the Algarve Tourist Board, articulated at the World Travel Market in London, the region boasts a rich array of experiences awaiting discovery.
Gomes emphasised the importance of the UK as a major international market, accounting for about 45% of the Algarve’s foreign visitors. This underscores the region’s commitment to enticing UK travellers not only to its beaches but also to its inland areas, which enjoy 300 days of sunshine annually.
The Algarve is placing a strategic emphasis on hosting international events to stimulate off-peak travel. Upcoming attractions in its calendar include a MotoGP tournament and a gastronomy festival, which aim to offer more authentic cultural interactions through local traditions, crafts, and culinary experiences.
As Mediterranean destinations grapple with issues of overtourism, Gomes discussed the need for effective visitor distribution within the Algarve. While the region is not yet overwhelmed by mass tourism, proactive measures are essential to manage tourist concentration and ensure a positive perception from the local community.
Moreover, the Algarve is tackling environmental sustainability issues, notably climate change and water management. Several initiatives have been launched to address these concerns, reflecting the destination’s ambition to be recognised as eco-friendly.
The Algarve is committed to presenting fresh opportunities and maintaining a strong focus on the UK market.
