Preparatory works for a new, accessible footbridge at Giffnock Station are commencing shortly.
- AmcoGiffen is undertaking preliminary activities as part of a £140 million Network Rail project.
- Existing footbridge will remain functional until the completion of the new structure in 2025.
- This project includes installing lifts to enhance accessibility for all passengers.
- The bridge’s installation aligns with the broader East Kilbride Enhancement project to finalise by December 2025.
Preparatory work for the installation of a new footbridge at Giffnock Station is set to begin in mid-September. AmcoGiffen, the contractor responsible for this project, is initiating vegetation clearance alongside platform 2 to ensure a safe working environment. This is a significant step as part of Network Rail’s expansive £140 million East Kilbride Enhancement electrification initiative.
The current footbridge at Giffnock Station will remain operational until the new structure’s anticipated completion in early 2025. This approach ensures minimal disruption to daily commuters and maintains accessibility across the station.
One of the defining features of the forthcoming footbridge is the inclusion of passenger lifts. These additions are intended to substantially improve the station’s accessibility, particularly benefitting individuals with reduced mobility, and those travelling with luggage, children or bicycles. According to Network Rail project manager Ailish Allan, “Replacing the footbridge is necessary to provide the safe clearance for the new overhead line equipment that will run underneath.”
The foundational work, which includes vital piling activities, is slated to commence in October and continue until the year’s end to establish the necessary footings for the bridge. This stage is critical to support the upcoming structural components of the new bridge.
The entire initiative is a key component of the broader East Kilbride Enhancement project, which aims to modernise and optimise the railway infrastructure across the region. Completion of this comprehensive project is expected by December 2025, marking a pivotal moment in regional rail service improvements.
The new footbridge at Giffnock Station is an integral part of enhancing regional railway infrastructure under the East Kilbride Enhancement project.
