In an inspiring display of solidarity, employees at a Manchester law firm have chosen to partake in fasting during Ramadan alongside their Muslim colleagues. This initiative not only demonstrates support but also encourages understanding and respect for different religious practices.
The non-Muslim participants at Barings Law embraced the challenge of abstaining from food and drink from sunrise to sunset, despite initial apprehensions. One participant, Ceylan Kolukisa, admitted to being nervous but expressed gratitude for the support received from Muslim colleagues. She described the experience as ‘fascinating,’ offering her a newfound appreciation for the dedication of those who observe Ramadan.
Reflecting this supportive atmosphere, Barings Law enhanced the experience by providing employees with traditional boxes of dates and £15 food vouchers. These gestures not only facilitated the fasting process but also contributed to a charitable cause, as proceeds from the dates support school meals for children worldwide.
The event, taking place on March 29th, saw seven non-Muslim employees joining their Muslim counterparts. Abshir Mussa, a practicing Muslim and employee at the firm, expressed his pleasure at the support offered by the law firm. He noted the sense of camaraderie and understanding fostered by such initiatives, which allow him to fulfil religious obligations with peace of mind.
Moreover, Managing Director Craig Cooper highlighted the importance of family and community within the firm. He praised the collective effort, noting that such events strengthen internal bonds and demonstrate the firm’s commitment to supporting diverse cultural and religious practices among staff.
