Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a significant player in the international defence sector, with its participation at IDEX 2023 marking a pivotal step in this endeavour. The event, renowned as a premier defence show, is a platform for countries to demonstrate advancements and share insights in military technologies. Through the leadership of the General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI), the Kingdom seeks to enhance its international presence and forge strategic partnerships.
At the helm of the Saudi delegation, GAMI is facilitating interactions between global investors and key officials from significant Saudi entities such as the Ministry of Interior and the World Defense Show (WDS). Their active involvement underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to nurturing international partnerships and attracting foreign capital. The Kingdom’s pavilion at IDEX spans an impressive 3,142 square meters, epitomising its ambition and dedication to expanding its global defence relations.
GAMI’s recent efforts, following an industrious 2022, have included international roadshows that reached London, Dubai, Washington DC, and other major cities. These initiatives aim to bolster Saudi Arabia’s reputation and draw investment into the Kingdom’s rapidly advancing defence sector. GAMI’s strategic vision includes localising more than 50% of Saudi Arabia’s defence expenditure by 2030, highlighting the nation’s shift towards self-reliance and reduced foreign dependency.
The localisation programme has identified over 70 investment opportunities across six defence domains, collectively valued at billions of dollars. This monumental initiative not only aims to uplift the Kingdom’s military capabilities but also seeks to enhance the local economy by developing domestic industries. Additionally, the successful hosting of the World Defense Show in Riyadh in 2022, which garnered 65,000 visitors and facilitated $5.9 billion in deals, signifies Saudi Arabia’s growing influence and strategic planning prowess.
GAMI’s commitment to attracting global investment is further evidenced by ongoing roadshows, webinars, and summits. The focus on strong international partnerships aligns with Saudi Arabia’s overarching goal to revolutionise its defence capabilities whilst strengthening economic prosperity through strategic collaborations.
Saudi Arabia’s efforts at IDEX 2023 underline its strategic vision for a robust and locally-supported defence sector by 2030.
