Bury Council has approved a significant redevelopment plan for Prestwich Village, totalling £100m.
- The project includes a joint effort between Muse and Bury Council, aiming for urban regeneration.
- Key elements include new housing, retail spaces, and a community hub for diverse activities.
- Additional features are a market hall and a village square for public events and social engagement.
- Local leaders believe this initiative will significantly enhance the village’s economic and social environment.
In a landmark decision, Bury Council has greenlit a £100 million development initiative set to redefine the Longfield Centre site in Prestwich. This ambitious project is a collaborative venture between Muse Developments and the local council, aimed at revitalising the locale with a blend of contemporary and functional urban design.
Central to the project is the construction of a new community hub, envisaged as a dynamic space that will house a library, flexible venues for art, culture, and community activities, and potentially a health centre. This hub is intended to act as a heartbeat for the community, encouraging social interaction and cultural prosperity.
Complementing the community facilities, a proposed village square will offer a versatile setting for hosting pop-up events such as markets, festivals, and live performances. This space is designed to foster community spirit and provide a platform for local enterprises and cultural expression.
Moreover, the development plans include a market hall conceived to accommodate smaller retailers, giving them a foothold in a bustling community environment. This is expected to attract a variety of local businesses, enhancing the shopping and cultural offerings available to residents.
The housing component of the scheme will introduce approximately 200 new homes, contributing to the local housing stock and providing modern living spaces in the heart of the village. This residential development is part of an overarching strategy to bolster the village’s economy and community lifestyle.
Bury Council leader, Eamonn O’Brien, emphasised the transformational potential of this project, stating, ‘These are truly transformative plans which will reshape Prestwich Village—from new housing to shops, leisure facilities and a better living environment. Regeneration of our town centres is a crucial part of ensuring that the whole of our borough can prosper and thrive for many generations to come.’
The approved scheme marks a significant milestone in Prestwich’s future vision, promising growth and community development.
