- Industry leaders highlight the importance of vigilance and awareness of similar scams.
A growing concern amongst businesses is the threat of social media extortion, as recently highlighted by a Blackburn agency owner who fell victim to a scam targeting her Facebook business page. The agent reveals how a ‘scam artist’ managed to have Facebook apply restrictions to the company’s page after lodging numerous complaints, claiming copyright infringement on certain images.
The owner, Marina Marsh, firmly believed that all posted content was legitimate, including images personally captured. However, she found herself entangled in an email exchange with the perpetrator, who demanded a sum of €500 to withdraw some of the accusations. This coercion was possibly predicated on the assumption that the small business would succumb to financial demands to avoid disruption.
Despite the setback, Marsh bravely opted to withstand 30 days of restricted account access rather than capitulate to the extortion attempt. Indeed, the agency feared a decline in business due to these limitations, but contrary to expectations, they experienced an uptick in trade, which Marsh describes as a fortunate anomaly.
Proactively addressing the issue, Marsh reported the incident to Action Fraud and made several attempts to contact Facebook directly, albeit unsuccessfully. Sharing her story, she highlighted the essential need for businesses to remain vigilant against such fraudulent activities that could impact their operations.
Barry Gooch, chairman of the Prevention of Fraud in Trade, underscored the significance of this threat, advising entrepreneurs to be mindful of potential social media scams. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals and the necessity for businesses to safeguard against such risks.
This incident underscores the urgent need for businesses to heighten vigilance against social media-based scams.
