Intrepid Travel is organising a unique trek to the summit of Mount Toubkal in Morocco to raise crucial funds for Education for All (EFA), a charity dedicated to enabling girls from rural areas in the High Atlas Mountains to pursue their education. The event is particularly timely, given the recent earthquake that struck near EFA’s operational region, causing significant damage to five out of six of their boarding facilities.
With accessibility, cost, and cultural barriers traditionally hindering educational opportunities for girls in these communities, the trek emerges as both a fundraising effort and a form of advocacy for educational equity. The charity trek from March 3-9, will not only raise funds but also offer participants insights into the local culture and firsthand observations of the earthquake’s impact.
Participants will undertake this journey guided by an experienced Intrepid guide, engaging with the local Amazigh people and immersing themselves in the region’s rich cultural tapestry. The concluding celebration will coincide with International Women’s Day (March 8), reinforcing the trek’s commitment to female empowerment and education.
Intrepid’s EMEA managing director and EFA patron, Zina Bencheikh, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting its dual role in both funding and fostering educational opportunities for girls. Sonia Omar, CEO of Education for All, remarks on the challenging year past and the hope and sense of purpose the trek brings for 2024.
The trek requires a fundraising commitment of at least £250 per participant, with all profits to be directed towards rebuilding efforts and educational initiatives. By joining the trek, participants contribute to a brighter future for young girls, enabling them to overcome both environmental and societal barriers to education.
This trek embodies a powerful stride towards recovery and educational empowerment in Morocco.
