Ponant reveals plans for an avant-garde, zero-emission cruise ship to launch by 2030.
- The vessel employs six pioneering technologies, integrating wind and solar energy for propulsion.
- Key features include photovoltaic panels and fuel cells using liquid hydrogen, with recycled outputs for maximum efficiency.
- Onboard carbon capture and an innovative energy management system further enhance sustainability.
- Ponant collaborates with Stirling Design International, exploring shipyard options for this French technological showcase.
Ponant has announced a visionary project that aims to revolutionise the maritime industry. By 2030, the company plans to launch a cruise ship that will operate with zero greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative promises a new era of eco-friendly navigation.
The ship will integrate six cutting-edge technologies that maximise the use of renewable energy sources. Utilising sail power and hull design, the vessel will harness wind to provide 50 per cent of its propulsion energy. Additionally, the incorporation of over 1,000m2 of photovoltaic panels will capture solar energy, making further strides towards sustainability.
This pioneering feat will include a sophisticated fuel cell system operating on liquid hydrogen. The system is ingeniously designed to recycle water and heat by-products, ensuring no wastage occurs. Moreover, a high-temperature fuel cell will cater to the vessel’s hotel load requirements, with heat recovery further optimising energy use.
To bolster its green credentials, the ship will feature advanced carbon capture technology. An innovative energy management system will adeptly control and distribute power, eliminating the need for traditional generators. This groundbreaking approach offers a glimpse into the future of environmentally responsible cruising.
Ponant collaborates with renowned naval architects Stirling Design International to bring this ambitious project to fruition. While discussions continue on selecting a suitable shipyard for construction, Ponant remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting sustainable maritime practices. As Hervé Gastinel, CEO of Ponant, articulates: ‘Our pioneering spirit drives us to contribute actively to the decarbonisation of the maritime sector.’
Ponant’s zero-emission ship represents a significant step in maritime sustainability, setting a new standard for eco-friendly cruising.
