An incident on the M25 near Heathrow could have escalated into a significant tragedy if not for the swift actions of a Pall-Ex lorry driver. On Monday, 18 March, this driver observed a van moving unpredictably across the lanes, exhibiting signs of a possible medical emergency as it approached junctions 14 and 15. Recognising the potential hazard, the driver utilised his vehicle to buffer the van, effectively reducing its speed and guiding it to a standstill.
Upon halting the van, the truck driver approached the vehicle to render aid. He found the van driver unconscious, slumped over the steering wheel, necessitating the release of the driver’s foot from the accelerator to prevent any further motion. Unfortunately, despite the presence of the London Ambulance Service and attempts at resuscitation, the elderly van driver, believed to be in his seventies, was pronounced dead at the scene from suspected natural causes.
The incident sparked commendation from the Metropolitan Police, who acknowledged the lorry driver’s quick thinking as a pivotal factor in preventing a more serious accident. The police arrived promptly at the scene following the collision report, accompanied by paramedics who performed CPR on the van driver. Despite their valiant efforts, the man could not be revived, marking a tragic end to the incident.
Pall-Ex expressed profound condolences to the deceased’s family and friends, highlighting their driver’s decisive intervention. This event underscores the unpredictability of road transport and the vital importance of readiness and skill in averting potentially disastrous situations.
