Holland America Line’s Vice-President of International Sales, Nico Bleichrodt, has announced strategic plans to significantly boost the company’s presence within the UK market. Currently, the UK accounts for a modest 5% of its total passenger numbers, with North America and Canada making up a substantial 85%. In an ambitious expansion strategy, Bleichrodt aims for the international market to grow to 25%, doubling the UK’s contribution to 10%.
To actualise this vision, a ship will be stationed in Dover by 2026, marking a deliberate effort to cater to and understand the UK passenger base better. Bleichrodt believes that operating from Dover will offer a “clearer vision” of the timeline needed to achieve these growth targets and anticipates reaching this milestone within a few years.
The emphasis on expanding the UK market is underscored by efforts from UK sales and marketing director, Karen Farndell, who has increased the 2024 UK ship visit programme from 430 to 500 agents. This initiative aims to strengthen ties with travel agents and provide them with a deeper understanding of potential clientele and market fit.
Moreover, Farndell stated that enhancing trade engagement is critical to this growth strategy. The cruise line is focusing on in-person ship visits and informative videos to offer agents a better grasp of the brand’s offerings. Such steps are seen as essential to increase the line’s market share in the UK.
These strategic initiatives highlight the company’s forward-thinking approach, seeking to not only tap into emerging markets like the UK and Australia but to also create enduring relationships through a robust network of informed trade partners.
Holland America Line is proactively engaging with the UK market to achieve its ambitious growth objectives.
