Orica UK, a prominent mining firm, has once again expanded its fleet with the addition of four Volvo FMX 460 6×4 trucks. This move exemplifies the enduring collaboration between Orica and Volvo Trucks, a partnership that has flourished for over two decades. Each newly acquired truck is specially outfitted with MEMU mixing tank bodies, which play a crucial role in the manufacturing of explosives for mining operations. This specific configuration underscores Orica’s commitment to utilising Volvo’s robust engineering to meet the demanding needs of the mining and quarry sectors.
The relationship between Orica UK and Volvo dates back to 2001 when they first opted for Volvo’s chassis for their specialist trucks. According to Ian Gregory, the Specialist Operations Support at Orica UK, the decision has been consistently advantageous. He highlights that all 15 of their operational trucks within the UK are Volvos, including their inaugural chassis which, after 23 years, recently passed its MOT without significant issues. Gregory notes with appreciation the reliability of these trucks, particularly given the constant engine use required to power the PTO on site.
Central to the selection of the new Volvo FMX models is the Euro-6 compliant Step E diesel engine, delivering 460 horsepower and a peak torque of 2,300 Nm. This specification not only meets strict emission standards but also offers sufficient power necessary for Orica’s heavy-duty requirements. Additionally, the trucks feature Volvo’s X-High chassis, an adaptation that provides the additional ground clearance required for off-road conditions prevalent in the mining and quarrying environments across the UK and the Western Isles.
Orica UK’s decision reflects its strategy of enhancing operational efficiency and maintaining robust performance standards. As part of the Orica Group, the firm is instrumental in providing mining and infrastructure solutions, encompassing the production of explosives, blasting systems, and geotechnical monitoring. The inclusion of the new trucks is a testament to Orica’s proactive approach to fleet management, ensuring that they remain at the forefront of industry needs while adhering to environmental regulations.
Orica UK’s fleet expansion with Volvo demonstrates a continuous commitment to operational excellence and enduring partnerships.
