Saga Group has achieved a significant milestone with its river cruise operations turning profitable for the first time since the pandemic, highlighting the resilience and adaptability of the travel and insurance company. The success is pivotal as it marks a shift towards financial recovery and growth, a sentiment echoed by CEO Mike Hazell who noted the strong performance across all travel brands.
The ocean cruise segment has been particularly outstanding, with earnings “far exceeding” the brand’s initial targets. This performance further underscores Saga Group’s strong foothold within the cruise industry, as it reported an underlying profit before tax of £35.5m compared to a loss of £0.7m in the previous year, showcasing a favourable year-on-year change of £36.2m.
Highlighting the consumer demand and operational efficiency, the river cruise arm exhibited a profit improvement of £8.1m, driven by enhanced revenue generation which reached 52 per cent of 2022 figures. This recovery aligns with broader trends of increased demand and economic rebound within the travel sector.
The outlook for future bookings remains promising for Saga Group. Forward bookings in the ocean cruise sector have already secured a load factor of 78 per cent with a per diem of £3,679 for the upcoming financial cycle, illustrating continued consumer interest and strategic planning that outpaces prior year figures. River cruise bookings are also ahead, boasting a load factor of 72 per cent and a per diem of £3,399.
To sustain and accelerate this growth trajectory, Saga Group plans to expand its river cruise fleet with the introduction of a new vessel, the “Spirit of the Moselle,” slated for launch in July 2025. This addition reflects the company’s commitment to meeting growing demand and enhancing its service offerings.
Saga Group’s proactive strategies and strong consumer demand bode well for its continued success and growth within the cruise industry.
