Continental has introduced its new truck tyre, the Eco Gen 5, promising improved efficiency and longevity.
- The Eco Gen 5 is specifically designed for both regional and long-distance haulage operations.
- This new tyre aims to offer better mileage and reduced rolling resistance compared to its predecessors.
- Continental emphasises the tyre’s role in lowering the total cost of ownership for fleet operators.
- Innovative design features have been incorporated to enhance both durability and efficiency.
Continental has unveiled its latest innovation, the Eco Gen 5 truck tyre, engineered to enhance efficiency and extend the lifespan of tyres used in both regional and long-distance haulage. This tyre is primarily noted for its ability to deliver better mileage and lower rolling resistance when compared to earlier models, such as the Conti EcoPlus Gen3+ and Conti EcoRegional Gen3+. By focusing on these improvements, Continental aims to support fleet operators in reducing their total cost of ownership, a critical consideration in today’s competitive transport industry.
Addressing the cost concerns of fleet operators, Continental estimates that a tyre’s purchase price constitutes only 2% of a truck’s total cost of ownership. This figure underscores the importance of operational efficiencies, as Tansu Isik, head of fleet solutions for Europe, Middle East and Africa, highlights. “Tyres significantly affect fuel, maintenance, and repair costs, in addition to administrative tasks and tolls,” he states, with these elements collectively representing approximately 50% of overall costs.
It is noted that during the tyre’s operational phase, rolling resistance is responsible for around 90% of a vehicle’s emissions. The remaining 10% of the tyre’s carbon footprint can be attributed to factors such as raw materials, production, logistics, and end-of-life processing. Continental has pursued a two-pronged strategy with the Eco Gen 5, offering the Conti Eco HS 5 for the steer axle and the Conti Eco HD 5 for drive axles, reflecting its dedication to comprehensive, multi-aspect improvements. The tyres are available in multiple sizes, and the optimised tread patterns aim to address both robustness and traction across varied transportation needs.
Hinnerk Kaiser, head of product development for bus and truck tyres in EMEA, comments on the sophisticated modifications, “By utilising a new tread design, we have successfully combined the durability of a long-distance tyre with the traction capabilities necessary for regional applications.” This design also features an optimised shoulder and a hard-wearing compound to assure even wear, enhancing mileage by 2% over previous models and reducing rolling resistance by 10%. Such advances demonstrate Continental’s commitment to overcoming the traditional trade-off between low rolling resistance and extended mileage.
From the manufacturing stage, the inclusion of sensors compatible with the ContiConnect digital tyre management system enables real-time monitoring of tyre pressure, thus bolstering both tyre longevity and fuel efficiency. Future enhancements are anticipated as Continental plans to expand sensor capabilities to measure tread depth, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to tyre management.
Continental’s Eco Gen 5 establishes a new benchmark in tyre technology, addressing critical efficiency and cost issues for fleet operators.
