In a decisive move to address infrastructure concerns, the railway line at New Mills, located southeast of Manchester, has been closed to facilitate critical repair works. This closure follows the detection of a significant embankment failure that arose in April, necessitating immediate attention to prevent potential landslides threatening the River Goyt below.
Initial investigations conducted earlier in the year confirmed the urgency of the situation, prompting Network Rail to commence primary remediation efforts by May. However, these works unveiled more intricate issues relating to drainage systems, which have added complexity to the project. The solution involves constructing five substantial drainage chambers beneath the railway, aimed at efficiently directing excess water to the river. This initiative is expected to enhance the railway’s resilience against climate change for over a century.
A Network Rail spokesperson provided insights into the geographical challenges at hand, describing the embankment’s strategic location on a sidelong ground amidst steep topography. The embankment is embedded in natural hillside materials, specifically glacial till, overlaying the more stable elements of the Millstone Grit Group. The team recognised the role of water infiltration in destabilising the structure, especially after severe weather events.
The collaboration with Coffey Geotechnics, a specialist consultancy, underscores the technical sophistication involved in addressing this failure. Vitesh Solanki, Network Rail’s project manager, expressed gratitude towards New Mills’ community for their patience and understanding as efforts continue to stabilise the region. Meanwhile, Northern urged passengers to anticipate travel adjustments due to the ongoing construction.
As a contingency, buses are set to substitute train services between Marple and Chinley, extending until the conclusion of the repairs slated for 23 September.
