Nicholas Cole, aged 47, has been sentenced to 42 weeks in prison following a serious collision on the M1 motorway that resulted in the death of a horse. This incident, which took place in July 2023, occurred between junctions 14 and 15 in Northamptonshire. Despite the presence of a red X gantry sign and a stationary Highways vehicle exhibiting flashing amber and red lights, Cole failed to divert from the closed lane, subsequently crashing into the horsebox.
The stationary horsebox was awaiting assistance due to a breakdown, while its driver and passengers were safely positioned on the roadside. In a critical oversight, Cole, who admitted to listening to the radio at the time, did not notice the warnings in time. His tardy attempt to manoeuvre his vehicle out of the lane resulted in a collision with the Highways vehicle before impacting the horsebox directly.
This negligent act not only led to the destruction of a valuable animal life but also highlighted significant lapses in driver attentiveness and adherence to motorway regulations. PS Richard Hill of Northamptonshire Police commented on the situation, emphasising the gravity of maintaining focus and complying with motorway signals to avert such tragic outcomes.
Sentenced at Northampton Crown Court, Cole has received a driver’s disqualification of 21 months in addition to his prison term.
