Rail Europe has sought to reassure travel agents, highlighting that they will remain central to its operations even as the company plans an expansion of its B2C sales efforts. The company, which provides access to 200 railways across 32 countries, is intent on increasing its direct bookings beyond the current one-third share of their total business. Chief Executive Björn Bender emphasised the ongoing focus on B2B, noting that, despite the shift, travel trade remains the backbone of Rail Europe.
Bender explained that the emphasis on B2C sales is driven by prevailing market dynamics where, across Europe, up to 85% of train ticket sales are direct to consumers. However, the significance of the UK market in Rail Europe’s B2B operations was also highlighted, with 56% of sales being derived from UK trade. This reiterates the company’s assurance that agents will continue to play a pivotal role in its business strategy.
The expansive reach of Rail Europe’s technology platforms guarantees immediate commission payments to travel agents, reinforcing the company’s commitment to its trade partners. RailFlash, one of their key technologies, is specifically designed to cater to customer needs efficiently, adding to the appeal for travel agents to continue partnering with them.
Empirical research suggests a yearly rise in preference for non-air travel modes by 3-5% until 2030. This trend promises a significant increase in rail travel demand, supporting Rail Europe’s plan for 20-25% growth in its B2B operations annually. Bender cited broader industry growth statistics, noting that both national and cross-border rail carriers are experiencing rapid yearly growth.
The popularity of Eurail passes among UK travellers is a testament to the growing interest in rail travel. Destinations like Switzerland are particularly popular, also seen with UK tourists frequently visiting Paris before journeying to Spain by train. Bender remains optimistic about the future, seeing no end to high demand and positive discourse surrounding train travel and environmental considerations.
Rail Europe’s strategy balances growth in B2C sales with steadfast support for its B2B partners, ensuring both pathways thrive together.
