Princess Cruises is making a strategic shift by redeploying the Grand Princess from its planned Australian itinerary to Puerto Rico for the winter 2025-26 season.
- Originally set to sail in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific, the Grand Princess will now mark Princess Cruises’ return to the Caribbean after more than a decade.
- The ship will operate from San Juan, Puerto Rico, with two alternating seven-night itineraries beginning October 2025.
- Passengers affected by the schedule change will be offered alternative cruises or refunds by Princess Cruises.
- Puerto Rico’s burgeoning tourism market and increased airlift make it an ideal new home for the Grand Princess.
Princess Cruises has announced a significant alteration to its deployment plans for the Grand Princess, shifting the vessel from scheduled routes in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific to the Caribbean. This move comes amid what the company describes as an “ongoing product strategy revision.” The Grand Princess will now anchor in San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the winter season of 2025-26, marking a return to the region after more than ten years of absence.
The revised itineraries for the Grand Princess feature two distinct seven-night round-trip journeys from San Juan. The first itinerary includes stops at Tortola, Saint Kitts, Dominica, Grenada, and Barbados, while the second offers visits to Saint Thomas, Saint Maarten, Antigua, Saint Vincent, and Barbados. These new routes signify a calculated effort by Princess Cruises to capitalise on the growing popularity and enhanced connectivity of Puerto Rico as a cruise destination.
For travellers previously booked on the Australian itineraries, Princess Cruises is taking steps to mitigate inconvenience by contacting those affected to offer alternative cruise options or a full refund. This customer-oriented approach seeks to address potential dissatisfaction that might arise from such unexpected changes.
Terry Thornton, Princess Cruises’ Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted the strategic benefits of the move, pointing out that Puerto Rico continues to be a rapidly growing destination in the Caribbean. With increased flights from key markets in the United States, Europe, and South America, the location provides favourable logistics for the cruise line’s guests. Thornton also emphasised the opportunities for enriching pre or post-cruise experiences in Puerto Rico—a place rich in history and charm.
This strategic redeployment underscores Princess Cruises’ commitment to adapting to market demand while enhancing passenger experience through diverse itinerary offerings.
