In a post-pandemic travel landscape, long-haul cruise bookings are experiencing a revival, marking a promising trend for the cruise industry.
- Europe remains a dominant player, with a substantial percentage of cruise bookings occurring in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and the Canary Islands.
- There is a marked interest in ‘bucket list’ destinations, with travellers opting for more exotic and extended cruise experiences.
- Expedition cruises to The Galapagos Islands and Borneo are capturing the attention of adventure-seeking passengers.
- Asia and South America have emerged as popular long-haul cruise destinations, reflecting a growing curiosity for global exploration.
The managing director of Clia UK & Ireland, Andy Harmer, revealed a positive shift in long-haul cruise bookings during the Clia Destination Showcase in Gibraltar. Despite a lag following the pandemic, the cruise industry’s long-haul segment is rebounding, driven by traveller demand for unique and extensive travel experiences.
In 2023, Europe accounted for the bulk of cruise bookings, with 35% in the Mediterranean, 29% in Northern Europe, and 10% in the Canary Islands. The remaining bookings are increasingly leaning towards more exotic locales, highlighting a consumer appetite for ‘bucket list and exploration destinations.’ This interest is rejuvenating the long-haul cruise market.
Among the destinations that stand out, The Galapagos Islands and Borneo are highly sought after for expedition cruises. Additionally, river cruises in regions such as Colombia, the Amazon, the Nile, and the Ganges are witnessing significant traction, indicating a diversification in cruise preferences.
Particularly noteworthy is the growing appeal of long-haul destinations such as Asia and South America, where demand has surged. These regions are demonstrating strong performance, with Japan emerging as a prime choice for cruisers seeking novel cultural experiences.
Andy Harmer encouraged delegates to leverage resources available on Clia’s website to further enhance their business offerings. These resources include virtual ship tours and a suite of educational tools designed to support cruise agents in capitalising on these emerging trends.
The resurgence in long-haul cruise bookings underscores a revitalised interest in global exploration, signalling a positive outlook for the cruise industry.
