The new head of Tui UK & Ireland is set to maintain current capacity levels, with flexibility to adjust as needed.
- Tui remains second in the UK Atol rankings, staying at 5.85 million passengers.
- Jet2holidays holds the top spot with over seven million passengers licensed.
- EasyJet holidays climbs to fourth place, increasing its licence from March 2024.
- Neil Swanson, Tui’s managing director, highlights the importance of flexibility and market response.
Neil Swanson, the newly appointed managing director of Tui UK & Ireland, intends to maintain the company’s current capacity while retaining the flexibility to make adjustments should market conditions require. He regards the existing capacity as optimal for maximising profitability, despite ongoing economic challenges.
In the recent Atol renewals, Tui firmly held its position as the second-largest operator in the UK market with a capacity of 5.85 million passengers. This places Tui just behind Jet2holidays, which has increased its licensed capacity to over seven million passengers, thereby leading the market. EasyJet holidays also made significant progress, ascending to fourth place with an increase in its passenger license to over three million, up from 2.2 million in March 2024.
Swanson cited an ‘incredibly’ late booking market over the summer of 2024, with consumers often booking only weeks before travel. Despite this, he reported strong load factors, indicating high demand but also noting that margins are coming under pressure. He observed a deceleration in the demand for longer trips, particularly those extending to 14 nights, and a slowdown in long-haul travel.
Although forward bookings remain strong, Swanson acknowledged ongoing pressures in the winter market, attributing this to the continuation of late bookings. He reported significant growth in shorter-duration trips, specifically four to nine nights, which in some instances, have surged by over 200%. He attributed this trend to consumers seeking maximum value for their expenditure, often finding that extending their stays slightly allows them to get more for comparable prices.
Tui UK & Ireland, under Neil Swanson, aims to strategically balance capacity and market demands to optimise performance.
