Switzerland Tourism is set to strengthen its connection with the UK travel trade as it aims to achieve its sustainability objectives.
- The UK market experienced a significant uplift in Swiss tourism, especially noted during December with a remarkable surge in hotel stays.
- Overnight stays in Switzerland from the UK reached 1.7 million in 2023, marking a record high for over a decade.
- Key areas such as Geneva, Zurich, and Lake Lucerne witnessed notable growth, driven by business tourism and seasonal appeal.
- Switzerland aims to capitalise on this trend by promoting sustainable travel, including the utilisation of panoramic trains and innovative tour options.
Switzerland Tourism has made a pronounced commitment to intensify its travel trade relations with the UK as part of its broader strategy to meet ambitious sustainability targets. This initiative follows a standout performance in December, where double-digit growth in hotel overnights from the UK was reported, characterising 2023 as the most successful year in over ten years for Swiss tourism from the British market.
The total number of hotel overnight stays in Switzerland by UK visitors reached 1.7 million in 2023. This achievement is underscored by a 2.8% increase when compared to the pre-pandemic period in 2019, with December marking a particularly strong month. This surge has been attributed to the revival of business tourism and the allure of Switzerland’s scenic locations during the winter months.
Destinations such as Geneva, Zurich, and the Lake Lucerne region emerged as significant hotspots. These areas have benefited from an upsurge in both leisure and business travelers, boosted by Switzerland’s efforts in promoting seasonal attractions and leveraging its natural beauty. The Lake Lucerne area, in particular, recorded the highest growth among Swiss holiday destinations, highlighting its burgeoning appeal.
The Swiss tourism board underscores the vital role of travel agents in fostering Switzerland’s appeal as an autumn destination. Alex Herrmann, Director of Switzerland Tourism UK and Ireland, emphasised the goal of encouraging tourists to ‘travel better’ by exploring less-travelled regions and seasons, aligning with Switzerland’s ‘Swisstainable’ initiative aimed at promoting sustainable travel practices.
Panoramic train journeys, especially during off-peak seasons, are gaining traction among British tourists. The post-Covid period saw multiple UK tour operators incorporating new itineraries that include train travel starting from London St Pancras, showcasing summer in the Swiss Alps and offering diverse travel experiences. Herrmann expressed enthusiasm for welcoming more UK travellers during the late summer and autumn months, offering a fresh perspective on Swiss city and mountain attractions.
Switzerland Tourism’s strategic partnership enhancement with the UK underscores its commitment to sustainable growth and innovation in the travel sector.
