- Explora II’s maiden voyage will commence on 16 September, embarking from Civitavecchia and visiting several Mediterranean destinations.

- The decision follows last year’s cancellation of the Explora I maiden voyage due to material issues, with recent changes in leadership and sales team appointments.
The launch of the Explora II vessel has been delayed to September 2024. This decision, taken jointly by Explora Journeys, the luxury arm of the MSC Group, and the shipbuilder Fincantieri, allows additional time for the completion of final touches to the vessel. The new delivery date is set for 12 September 2024, pushing the maiden voyage to commence on 16 September.
The inaugural journey will begin in Civitavecchia, Italy, and will include a seven-night sailing to destinations such as Sorrento, Lipari, Trapani, and Siracusa in Sicily, Valletta in Malta, and Tarragona in Spain, providing a rich itinerary for passengers seeking Mediterranean exploration.
Explora Journeys has initiated contact with guests affected by the delay, either directly or through their travel agents. Efforts are underway to arrange alternative cruises for these guests, either on the Explora II or its sister ship, Explora I, which is also scheduled to sail in the Mediterranean region during the summer.
This delay comes after a similar disruption last year when the maiden voyage of Explora I had to be cancelled due to material issues. These events underscore the challenges faced by the luxury cruise provider as it strives to maintain high standards.
Furthermore, Explora Journeys has seen recent shifts in its executive team, with the stepping down of chief executive Michael Ungerer earlier this year for personal reasons, after a tenure of nearly five years marked by significant brand establishment and leadership. Additionally, there has been an expansion of the sales team in the UK and Ireland, reflecting broader strategic adjustments within the organisation.
The delay in Explora II’s launch reflects Explora Journeys’ commitment to ensuring a premium cruising experience despite recent operational challenges.
