In a bid to reinforce its commitment to sustainability, Ponant has disclosed progress on its multifaceted environmental strategy. The cruise line has achieved an 11% decrease in CO2 emissions per cruise day compared to 2018. Such advances are a testament to the company’s efforts in integrating sustainable practices into its operations. These include leveraging advanced technologies designed to minimise the ecological impact of their fleet.
A cornerstone of Ponant’s strategy is the incorporation of biofuels, which aim to substantially cut carbon emissions. The trial usage of biofuel has shown promising results, generating 90% fewer CO2 emissions than conventional fossil fuels. Already, twelve vessels have been certified to utilise biofuels, laying the groundwork for Ponant’s target of net-zero emissions by 2050.
In addition to reducing carbon outputs, Ponant has implemented comprehensive waste management protocols across its operations. All waste is now meticulously separated and processed onboard, with a remarkable 73% of drinking water produced from seawater via filtration systems. The reduction of single-use plastics is another significant achievement, with over 20 tonnes avoided fleet-wide.
Ponant’s commitment extends beyond immediate operational changes, underscored by its dedication to scientific research. A significant financial commitment of €2.2 million last year focused on the study and protection of marine ecosystems. This funding is set to expand further in 2025, with additional vessels slated to support research initiatives in remote global locations.
Wassim Daoud, the head of CSR and sustainability at Ponant, articulates the company’s vision: “Although we are proud of our accomplishments, we acknowledge that the journey toward sustainable tourism is ongoing.” With innovation and cooperation at its heart, Ponant aims to set exemplary standards within the industry, fostering accountability and transparency in sustainability efforts.
Ponant is poised to establish itself as a leader in sustainable tourism through its robust, forward-thinking initiatives.
