Explora Journeys has taken delivery of its second luxury ship, Explora II, signifying a crucial advancement in its €3.5 billion initiative to establish a fleet of six ships by 2028. This expansion underscores the MSC Group’s dedication to charting new courses in luxury sea travel. The sleek new ship stands ready for its maiden tour, scheduled to embark on September 16, departing from Civitavecchia, the port serving Rome, before navigating through the scenic locales of Sicily, Malta, and Spain.
Explora II’s debut journey will transition to the Caribbean, where it will operate over the winter months, subsequently making its return to Mediterranean waters for summer 2025. The ship promises an opulent experience with its 461 state-of-the-art suites, penthouses, and residences, complemented by six gourmet restaurants, twelve vibrant bars and lounges, four expansive swimming pools, and a series of rejuvenating wellness venues.
In tandem with the celebration of Explora II, the keel-laying ceremony of Explora III at the Fincantieri shipyard near Genoa marked another pivotal point for the expansion. The ship, designed to harness the potential of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a sustainable fuel, is projected to commence service by 2026. MSC has praised LNG for its compatibility with renewable substitutes, such as bio-LNG and synthetic LNG, presenting a viable path towards more sustainable maritime operations.
Coinciding with these advancements, the shipyard has commenced the construction of Explora IV, which also promises to be LNG-fuelled, with an anticipated completion timeframe set for early 2027. Meanwhile, Explora V, expected in 2027, and Explora VI, scheduled for 2028, are designed to incorporate substantial fuel cell capacities. Such innovations will enable these vessels to convert renewable LNG into hydrogen, thereby significantly curtailing emissions and setting new standards for eco-friendly travel.
Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of MSC’s cruise division, hailed the delivery of Explora II as a landmark moment for both Explora Journeys and the larger MSC Group. “The delivery of Explora II represents a significant milestone for Explora Journeys and the MSC Group, in our commitment to set new standards in global luxury travel at sea.” This sentiment underscores the global strides being made in enhancing luxury travel experiences while concurrently addressing environmental responsibilities.
The advancement of the Explora fleet marks a pivotal progression in luxury ocean travel, showcasing innovation and sustainability in equal measure.
