A recent survey reveals significant support for AI in background screening among EMEA businesses.
- Over 90% of businesses are comfortable with AI or automation in screening reports.
- EMEA respondents appreciate AI for reducing human error and speeding up processes.
- Accurate results have become a priority over cost and speed in screening.
- Regional differences highlight distinct candidate discrepancies in EMEA and North America.
According to a recent survey conducted by a leading global employment background screening provider, more than 90% of businesses in the EMEA region express comfort with the use of AI or automation in the background screening process. This trend is indicative of a broader acceptance of technological integration in employment practices, where AI’s potential to enhance efficiency and accuracy is increasingly recognised by corporate entities.
The survey highlights that 83% of EMEA respondents find the application of AI beneficial in minimising human error, while 79% appreciate its role in accelerating procedures. These figures underscore the growing trust in AI technologies to streamline operations and improve the overall candidate experience.
Respondents also indicated that while cost savings and improved candidate experience are notable advantages, the accuracy of the screening results has emerged as a top priority, with 72% listing it as their primary concern—a significant increase from 50% in the previous year. This shift points towards a heightened emphasis on ensuring precise and reliable background checks, reflecting a conscientious approach to risk management.
Furthermore, the survey delineates regional disparities in candidate discrepancies. In the EMEA region, inaccuracies primarily stem from discrepancies in candidates’ employment history and educational credentials. Conversely, North American employers frequently encounter undisclosed criminal records. These differences illustrate the varied challenges and priorities in background screening across different geographies.
Marc Sharma, Director of Engineering, Applied Machine Learning at the screening provider, emphasises the deliberate and secure integration of AI in their processes. He stated, “Given the sensitivity of the data we handle, none of our planned process workflows can be considered a standalone AI system that automates employment decisions. Instead, we use a hybrid, and well-known, ‘Human in the Loop’ type system.” This hybrid approach appears to resonate well with employers, who appreciate the balance between technological and human oversight.
The report underscores a growing confidence in AI’s role in enhancing the integrity and efficiency of background screening processes.
