The Netherlands’ position as a leader in the photonics sector gets a significant boost with Invest-NL’s €5 million investment in PhotonVentures, a specialised fund focused on nurturing photonics startups. This move underscores the nation’s strategic commitment to maintaining its competitive edge in a technology that is pivotal to both national and European innovation.
PhotonVentures operates with an ecosystem perspective, which facilitates quicker access to customer feedback and harnesses an international network for growth. As a result, young companies in its portfolio are uniquely positioned in the rapidly developing photonics market. This is evident in its current support of 14 leading firms, including Smart Photonics, Effect Photonics, Phix, PhotonFirst, and VitreaLab.
The recent capital injection from Invest-NL, alongside contributions from prominent tech investors and organisations like the University of Twente and TNO, showcases a concerted effort to drive innovation within the sector. This collective investment not only strengthens the fund’s capital base but also reinforces the Netherlands’ position as a key player in the global photonics industry.
PhotonVentures aims for a final fund size of €100 million by the end of the year, further emphasising the importance of continued investment in photonics. Ewit Roos, General Partner at PhotonVentures, welcomed Invest-NL, viewing their involvement as a vote of confidence in the fund’s potential and its critical role in advancing photonics technology.
Investment Manager Liz Duijves of Invest-NL described photonics as a priority within the national technology strategy. With PhotonVentures being one of the few photonics-focused funds in Europe, this investment represents a significant contribution towards innovation and growth in the Dutch integrated photonics industry.
