The Severn Tunnel has been revitalised with a successful 7.1km track renewal. This massive undertaking, spearheaded by the South Rail Systems Alliance, marks a milestone in rail infrastructure improvement.
- The renewal project was conducted in a 16-day possession, starting from the England entrance to Wales.
- The operation saw the installation of 66 rails, 10,800 sleepers, and 22,000 tonnes of new ballast.
- Innovative use of a ‘conveyor belt’ method facilitated the timely completion of the project.
- This achievement has significantly improved the track’s condition, making it the safest it has been for generations.
In a remarkable feat of engineering, the South Rail Systems Alliance (SRSA) renewed 7.1 kilometres of track within the Severn Tunnel. This substantial upgrade was achieved during a continuous 16-day possession, an effort that the Alliance lauds as a ‘rail industry first’. The operation commenced at the English end of the tunnel, progressing methodically to the Welsh side.
Utilising a phased approach, the project was meticulously planned and executed in 700-metre sections. This strategy enabled a ‘conveyor belt’ of activities to occur simultaneously, involving numerous engineering trains and working fronts. Such strategic planning facilitated seamless progression within the tunnel.
The project’s completion involved the installation of 66 rails each spanning 216 metres, alongside 10,800 sleepers and 22,000 tonnes of new ballast. The logistical challenge of handling 24,000 tonnes of spoil was also expertly managed, ensuring an efficient renovation process.
The Alliance deployed its on-track machine fleet to conclude the works, with tampers finalising the track position. The project was further supported by the freight division, which was integral to the operation of the 41 engineering trains that transported materials and waste.
Previously, SRSA renewed sections of the up line in the Severn Tunnel during two separate 10-day possessions over the past two summers. These prior projects involved renewing 3 kilometres of track in 2022 and an additional 3.2 kilometres in 2023, showcasing the Alliance’s dedication to enhancing the region’s rail infrastructure.
The Severn Tunnel track renewal project stands as a testament to exceptional engineering oversight and collaborative effort.
