Marking a notable development in transport infrastructure, the M6 motorway between Warrington and Wigan has been augmented with 16km of new lanes. This enhancement is part of an extensive smart motorway upgrade, featuring new lanes in both northbound and southbound directions. Stretching from Junction 21a to the Orrell interchange at Junction 26 with the M58, the project signifies a substantial capacity increase for this busy corridor.
The opening of these lanes serves as a key point in the £260 million upgrade programme that commenced in March 2021. Following recommendations from a 2021 Transport Select Committee inquiry, which criticised the distance between refuge areas on all lanes running (ALR) smart motorways, the project was extended in December. Ultimately, this resulted in the creation of 22 emergency areas, addressing a critical safety concern.
In addition to structural enhancements, the newly upgraded section between Warrington and Wigan operates under a temporary maximum speed limit of 80 km/h (50 mph) whilst technological systems undergo calibration. These systems include the installation of stopped vehicle detection technology, employing radar to swiftly notify operators of halted vehicles. This capability allows for the dynamic management of traffic, ensuring timely interventions.
With a daily throughput of around 120,000 vehicles, this section of the motorway represents a vital link between major regions such as Lancashire, Merseyside, Cheshire, and Greater Manchester.
