United Airlines to elevate customer experience at Bush Intercontinental Airport

United Airlines, beginning this fall, will take new steps to elevate the customer experience at Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport by offering customers shorter, more convenient connection times and better access to more destinations, the company said.

The operations enhancement will enable United to improve connectivity throughout its industry-leading global route network, as adjustments to the flight schedule will connect customers more efficiently. The move, which will take effect Oct. 29, will also enable the airline to better utilize the approximately 90 gates from which it operates at the airport.

United is continuing to invest in its employees in Houston, providing them with more of the tools they need to better serve customers, particularly under the new structure. The airline is also increasing staffing and adding new lobby check-in kiosks to provide customers with a more efficient airport experience.

This effort is called “rebanking.” United has traditionally operated a schedule of ten “flight banks” at Houston, with the hub serving as a connection point for east-to-west routes across the US along with Latin America. With the new effort, United will consolidate existing flights into an enhanced eight-bank structure, connecting customers from all directions, enabling the airline to use aircraft more effectively throughout the entire country.

United´s customers will see big transformation at the airline´s Houston hub in 2018 with the completion of its USD 277 million investment in the new C North Concourse where United customers will enjoy roomier gate areas, the latest technology and chef-inspired dining choices.

United Airlines and United Express operate more than 4,500 flights a day to 339 airports across five continents. In 2016, United and United Express operated more than 1.6 million flights carrying more than 143 million customers. United operates 737 mainline aircraft and the airline´s United Express carriers operate 483 regional aircraft.

CMG Capital to provide airplane financing through partnership

CMG Capital, a Florida-based lender, has established a partnership with L & L International, LTD, a worldwide provider of corporate jet aircraft sales and acquisition, the company said.

The venture enables CMG Capital to provide strategic financing for the purchase, trade-in, or lease of corporate and personal aircraft, while L & L International provides aircraft expertise.

Together, the two companies have the financial resources to execute the deal and the aircraft experience to assist clients throughout the entire process of an airplane purchase, lease or sale, including alternative financing and leases with the option to purchase the aircraft.

As aircraft transactions and operations become more complex, L&L´s established sales and acquisition strategies, sophisticated research tools and global capabilities should become all the more valuable to clients.

CMG Capital will be working closely with L & L´s aviation consultants.

Tempus Applied Solutions gets USAF contract

Tempus Applied Solutions has been awarded a contract from the United States Air Force (USAF) to provide technical services and flight operations to the USAF Weapons Development and Integration Directorate, (WDID) Platform Integration Function, for aviation systems, the company said.

Tempus will integrate the USAF´s High-Altitude LIDAR Atmospheric Sensing (HALAS) system into a modified Gulfstream IV aircraft owned by the company. The laser-equipped sensor has the capability of measuring, with great precision, atmospheric conditions well into the stratosphere.

Tempus will assist in the airborne testing of USAF´s ground-proven HALAS system upon completion of the sensor integration and airframe modifications. If exercises are successful, atmospheric testing will be substantially improved, with a significant reduction in error factors from older sensing capabilities.

The contract consists of two parts; aircraft modification/integration and flight operations. Modifications will take place at Tempus´ Brunswick, Maine, modification center and will consist of significant engineering and electrical modifications, including the integration of an ultraviolet laser, telescope and advanced optical sensors.

Under the contract, once the aircraft modifications have been completed, fifty hours of flight operations and testing are to be conducted by Tempus in the United States and selected oceanic areas. Tempus expects the contract to generate total revenues of approximately USD 1.2 million.

The contract will be executed through the course of 2017, with modifications occurring from June 2017 to September 2017 and flight operations beginning in October 2017. Assuming successful testing of the installed equipment during flight, Tempus intends to continue to offer the system for a variety of commercial and military purposes starting in 2018.

Tempus provides design, engineering, systems integration and flight operations solutions that support critical aviation mission requirements for a variety of customers including the United States Department of Defense, other US government agencies, foreign governments and select corporations and individuals in the private sector.

Asiana Airlines chooses Honeywell 131-9A auxiliary power units for multiple aircraft

Honeywell (NYSE: HON) has been selected by Asiana Airlines to supply the required power to start an aircraft´s main engines and run air conditioning while the plane is on the ground for a more comfortable passenger onboarding experience, the company said.

With Honeywell´s auxiliary power units, Asiana Airlines can also improve operational performance and lower maintenance costs over the life cycle of its fleet to achieve significant fuel savings year over year.

An auxiliary power unit (APU) is a critical aircraft component that provides primary or backup electrical power for environmental, cockpit and hydraulic systems during flight.

Honeywell will supply its 131-9A APUs to 74 Asiana Airlines aircraft, of which 49 will be retrofitted on the airline´s existing Airbus A320ceo (current engine option) and A321ceo fleet, and the remaining 25 on its new Airbus A321neo fleet. Known for its reliability, the 131-9A series helps reduce delays and flight cancellations to keep airlines on schedule and ensure their passengers reach their destinations on time.

The retrofit program for the Airbus A320ceo and A321ceo fleet will run from 2017 until 2020, while delivery for the new Airbus A321neo fleet is scheduled from 2019 until 2025.

Honeywell will provide Asiana Airlines with a global network of maintenance services from its local customer support team based in South Korea, together with an established APU maintenance facility in Singapore that has a strong, longstanding relationship with Asiana Airlines. In March 2017, Airbus designated the Honeywell 131-9A APU as standard equipment for its A320 family of aircraft. Honeywell´s APU is now recognized as the gold standard for the A320 family.

Honeywell invented the first APU in 1948 and is still the largest producer of gas turbine engines globally. The company has produced more than 95,000 APUs and has more than 36,000 in service today across more than 150 regional, executive, commercial and military applications, including both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft.

Boeing expands CFO Smith's role

Boeing (NYSE: BA) has expanded the enterprise responsibilities of Greg Smith, currently the company´s chief financial officer and executive vice president of Corporate Development & Strategy, the company said.

Starting July 1, Smith, 51, will serve as chief financial officer and executive vice president of Enterprise Performance & Strategy, adding a range of duties focused on ensuring strong and consistent business performance, continued achievements in innovation and corporate functional excellence.

Among the responsibilities that will shift to Smith in the months ahead are oversight of the integration and execution of the company´s new three business unit strategy, which includes the July 1 launch of Boeing Global Services; acceleration of company-wide innovation, productivity and market-based affordability projects; and leadership of a new talent management system for identifying, developing and deploying general managers and program managers.

Boeing is the world´s largest aerospace company and manufacturer of commercial airplanes and defense, space and security systems.

Alaska Airlines introduces Seattle Mariners-themed plane

As a symbol of the long-standing partnership between Alaska Airlines and the Seattle Mariners, Alaska officially unveiled a specially marked Boeing 737-800, featuring the Seattle Mariners logo and the 40th anniversary design across the fuselage, the company said.

The official hashtag of the Mariners-Alaska partnership, #MyOhMariners, appears next to the boarding door. Guests seated over the wings will be able to see the hashtag on the plane´s winglets.

For every home run hit by a Mariners player during the 2017 season, as part of the Mariners Care program, Alaska will donate 10,000 airline miles to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) – Seattle Chapter to help worthy students succeed in education.

Miles donated supplement a 1-million-mile seed gift from Alaska Airlines and will help students fly to college tours, travel back and forth between school and home, and participate in a variety of leadership development programs and other programming offered by UNCF. This year there have been 73 home runs to-date and the total is expected to reach the goal of 100 by the close of the season.

Southwest Airlines service to Varadero and Santa Clara to end Labor Day 2017

Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) will concentrate its future service to Cuba in Havana (HAV) and will cease operations in both Varadero (VRA) and Santa Clara (SNU) at the end of day on Monday, Sept. 4, 2017, the company said.

Southwest® currently serves Havana twice daily nonstop from Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and once daily nonstop from Tampa International Airport (TPA) and has applied with the US Department of Transportation for a third daily roundtrip between Ft. Lauderdale and Havana.

SES, SaT5G to develop ubiquitous 5G network capabilities

SES (Euronext Paris:SESG) (LuxX:SESG) has announced that the Satellite and Terrestrial Network for 5G (SaT5G) consortium, comprising SES and 15 further members, has been tasked to integrate satellite into 5G networks, enabling ubiquitous and instantaneous 5G coverage and capacity, the company said.

Funded by the European Commission under the 5G PPP Phase 2 of the Horizon 2020 programme for Research & Innovation, the 30-month project will kick off in June 2017. It aims to deliver the seamless integration of satellite into 5G networks to ensure ubiquitous 5G access everywhere.

The consortium will be focusing on extending 5G security to satellite, exploiting multicast for content distribution and driving relevant standardisation efforts mainly in 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). The key enabling technologies will be trialled and assessed through live testbed demonstrations across Europe.

The Satellite and Terrestrial Network for 5G (SaT5G) consortium consists of 16 partners: Avanti Communications, Thales Alenia Space France, University of Surrey, SES, Airbus Defence and Space, OneAccess, TNO (Nederlandse Organisatie Voor Toegepast Natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek), British Telecommunications, Zodiac Inflight Innovations, Broadpeak, Gilat Satellite Networks, VT iDirect, imec, i2CAT Foundation, University of Oulu and Quortus.

The consortium´s main goal is to research, develop and validate key technologies required to enable the plug-and-play integration of satellite communications into 5G networks. The SaT5G consortium´s project coordinator is Avanti Communications.
