Harris chosen by Turkey to upgrade air traffic management communication system

Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) has been selected to supply a next-generation, VoIP communication system to support the Republic of Turkey´s air traffic management (ATM) services, the company said.

Harris was chosen following a rigorous review by Devlet Hava Meydanlari Isletmesi (DHMI), Turkey´s air navigation service provider.

Harris will provide DHMI with its cloud-based Voice Communication System for the 21st Century (VCS21). It will be installed at seven facilities in Turkey, and will include more than 337 controller working positions that can access up to 52 radio sites across DHMI control operations.

The VCS21 system will be part of the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) project, a collaborative initiative to modernize European airspace and air traffic control. VCS21 delivers net-centric voice communications that reduce dependency on traditional point-to-point communications, while supporting an efficient transition to IP-based communications.

Harris Corporation provides technology solutions to government and commercial customers in more than 100 countries. The company is organized into three business segments: communication systems, space and intelligence systems, and electronic systems. It has approximately USD 6 billion in annual revenue.

Drone operations management company Skyward acquired by Verizon

New York City, New York-based Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE, Nasdaq: VZ) has purchased Portland, Oregon-based Skyward, a private company providing drone operations management, the company said.

Verizon Ventures, the company´s venture capital division, brought Skyward in as an IoT portfolio company. Terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.

With Skyward´s technology, Verizon will streamline the management of drone operations through one platform designed to handle end-to-end activities such as mission planning, complex workflow, FAA compliance support, supplying information about restricted airspace and pilot credentialing, drone registration and provisioning rate plans for drones on Verizon´s network.

GCA Advisors LLC acted as financial advisor to Skyward, and Perkins Coie LLP acted as legal advisor.

Verizon Communications has a diverse workforce of 160,900 and generated nearly USD 126bn in 2016 revenues. Verizon´s wireless network consists of 114.2 million retail connections nationwide.

Embraer appoints new Executive Jets CEO

Embraer has appointed Michael Amalfitano as the President and CEO of its Executive Jets business unit, the company said.

Amalfitano will succeed Marco Tulio Pellegrini, who will assume another leadership position to be announced soon. The change will become effective as of March 1st 2017.

Amalfitano brings 35 years of experience in corporate aircraft finance, having held several global leadership positions with equipment leasing companies such as Stonebriar Commercial Finance, Banc of America Leasing, Fleet Capital, and GE Capital.

DRI, Drone America record longest unmanned, cross-country drone flight in Nevada history

Flown at Hawthorne Industrial Airport under Nevada UAS test sites Certificate of Authorization (COA) and led by the Desert Research Institute (DRI) flight operations node, the Drone America Savant unmanned cloud-seeding aircraft reached an altitude of 1,500 feet and completed a one-hour beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) flight covering a total distance of 28 nautical miles, the DRI said.

The test flight of the Savant cloud-seeding aircraft was the longest unmanned, cross-country round-trip flight in Nevada history. BVLOS describes an aviation event in which the unmanned aircraft flies autonomously over a long distance. Flight crew members control and track the aircraft in real-time using computer-aided controls, but the pilot is not capable of visually following the aircraft during flight with the naked eye.

For more than a year a DRI-led research team, supported by the Nevada Governor´s Office of Economic Development through the Knowledge Fund, has been working to develop an unmanned cloud seeding aircraft capable of enhancing snowfall in mountainous regions of the West.

Desert Research Institute is the nonprofit research arm of the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Waypoint leases H145 to Andes Air supporting Peruvian mining operations

Limerick, Ireland-based Waypoint Leasing Limited has delivered an H145 on lease to Servicios Aéreos de los Andes (Andes Air), a Peruvian helicopter operator, the company said.

Waypoint´s H145 will support MMG/Las Bambas´ mining operations from Andes Air´s Cusco base, and further diversify Waypoint´s activity into the utility and mining support segment.

Waypoint is a global helicopter leasing company that provides operating lease and financing solutions to helicopter operators worldwide. The company serves a wide range of sectors including oil and gas, emergency medical service, search and rescue, firefighting and governmental support. PEMCO wins YTO Cargo Airlines contract for 3 passenger-to-freighter converted aircraft

PEMCO World Air Services has signed an agreement with YTO Cargo Airlines (YTO) for 3 B737-300 passenger-to-freighter (P-to-F) converted aircraft, the company said.

China-based YTO, which is currently operating one B737-300 PEMCO-converted aircraft, will take delivery of the three aircraft through Q4 2017.

The B737-300 PEMCO-converted aircraft features nine pallet positions, up to 43,100 pounds of payload, and 4,600 cubic feet of total volume. The optimized center of gravity of PEMCO´s B737-300 freighter yields the highest possible usable payload and retains maximum best-in-class fuel efficiency for unbeatable range and operating economics.

PEMCO World Air Services, an airborne maintenance and engineering services company, serves customers from airlines to private operators. Its B737 freighter conversions are designed, certified, and supported using data obtained through a Boeing Data licensing agreement to ensure maximum performance and reliability.

Juneyao Airlines finalizes USD 1.32bn order for 5 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners

Boeing [NYSE: BA] has announced that Juneyao Airlines has finalized an order for five 787-9 Dreamliners, valued at about USD 1.32bn at current list prices, the company said.

This new order, which also includes options for 5 more 787-9s, represents the Shanghai, China-based private airline´s first Boeing order and first widebody airplane order.

Juneyao Airlines currently operates domestic routes and short-haul international flights to neighboring countries such as Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. The carrier plans to open new routes to North America, Europe, and Australia by 2020.

DIA wins Routes Americas awards

Denver International Airport (DIA) was announced as the overall winner of the Routes Americas 2017 Marketing Awards at the 10th annual Routes Americas conference held in Las Vegas, the organization said.

The annual World Routes Marketing Awards recognise excellence in airport and destination marketing. Airlines vote for the marketing services that support the successful launch of new routes or the development of existing ones, making them highly regarded in the aviation industry.

In addition to the overall winner, the awards are judged in five categories. Denver was also honoured in the ´Over 20 Million Passengers´ category.

As overall winner, Denver will be automatically shortlisted for the World Routes Awards held in Barcelona, Spain.

Routes events are unique forums dedicated to the development of new air services. Five ´regional´ route development forums are held between February and June in the Americas, Asia, Europe and Africa, with the flagship World Routes event taking place in September.

Routes was founded in 1995 and is part of the EMEA division of UBM plc.

NAV CANADA reports January traffic figures

NAV CANADA has reported its traffic figures for the month of January 2017 as measured in weighted charging units for enroute, terminal, and oceanic air navigation services, in comparison to the prior fiscal year, the company said.

Weighted charging units represent a traffic measure that reflects the number of flights, aircraft size and distance flown in Canadian airspace.

Air traffic in January 2017 increased by an average of 5.6% compared to the same month in 2016. Fiscal 2017 year-to-date traffic was 5.3% higher than in the prior fiscal year. NAV CANADA´s fiscal year runs from September 1 to August 31.
