American Airlines announces USD 50k Bonnie Award for innovative female film director

American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL) is recognizing the importance of women in film by announcing a new USD 50,000 award for independent film directors at this year´s Film Independent Spirit Awards, the airline said.

The Bonnie Award will be given to an up-and-coming female director and seeks to honor their innovative vision and breakthrough work in the entertainment industry.

The award´s namesake, Bonnie Tiburzi Caputo, was the first female pilot to fly for a major US airline. Tiburzi began her career in 1973 when she was hired by American Airlines as a flight engineer. Tiburzi flew for American for 26 years before retiring.

As the preferred airline to the entertainment industry, American Airlines is the official airline and premier sponsor of the Film Independent Spirit Awards, the awards show for the independent film community.

American Airlines and American Eagle offer an average of nearly 6,700 flights per day to nearly 350 destinations in more than 50 countries. It is a founding member of the oneworld alliance, whose members serve more than 1,000 destinations with about 14,250 daily flights over 150 countries.

Now in its 32nd year, the Film Independent Spirit Awards is an annual celebration honoring artist-driven films made with an economy of means by filmmakers whose films embody independence and originality. The Spirit Awards recognizes the achievements of American independent filmmakers and promotes the finest independent films of the year to a wider audience.

Held, Feilen join CLEAR executive team

CLEAR has added two hospitality industry veterans, Kerry Held – Senior Vice President of Direct Sales and Corporate Partnerships, and Ben Feilen – Senior Vice President of Operations, to the its leadership team, the company said.

Held previously worked as Director of Client Relations at Hospitality Quotient, the consulting arm of Danny Meyer´s Union Square Hospitality Group, will oversee the sales, training, and development teams while also negotiating corporate partnerships.

Feilen was most recently responsible for overseeing OTG´s airport businesses. At CLEAR he will be responsible for operations at the company´s growing network of 21 airport locations and seven professional sports venues, with a focus on ensuring fast, predictable service every time a member uses CLEAR.

The new appointments follow a major national expansion by CLEAR into airports around the country over the last several months. In the coming weeks CLEAR will be opening at LAX, bringing its airport network to 22 locations.

CLEAR´s technology uses fingerprints and iris images to confirm members´ identities instantly. Travelers have used CLEAR, certified as a “qualified anti-terrorism technology” by the US Department of Homeland Security, more than five million times to move through airport security lines. The technology is also available at select professional sports stadiums.

CLEAR is a biometric identity platform, with a growing base of nearly one million members nationwide.

Kapsch chosen to provide PANYNJ transportation management software

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) has awarded Kapsch TrafficCom a four-year, USD 8.8m contract to install agency-wide transportation management software (ATMS), the company said.

The contract consists of a four-year base term followed by two additional one-year optional support periods. Powered by Kapsch´s DYNAC software, the new system will enable the Authority to manage ITS assets at its bridges, tunnels, aviation and port facilities, and the PATH rail transit system from any of its individual facility operations control centers and the PA-AOC.

The new ATMS will help the Authority improve operational efficiency, agency-wide visibility of travel conditions, enhance regional transportation coordination, and better manage its critical transportation-related assets.

Kapsch will merge 21 independent traffic and facility management data systems into a single enterprise DYNAC-based ATMS. Deployed in redundant data centers to improve reliability, maintainability and security, the new ATMS will replace independent legacy systems with an agency-wide, next generation architecture. All Authority assets will be able to be managed from any individual facility as well as the PA-AOC, providing agency-wide situational awareness.

US Cellular's 'Community Connections' back for 3rd year

US Cellular´s “Community Connections” program is back for the third consecutive year to provide sponsorship support to local youth organizations, the company said.

Air New Zealand to use Unisys cloud-based e-booking portal

Air New Zealand has joined Unisys Cargo Portal Services (CPS) to allow the airline´s current and prospective freight forwarder clients to book and track shipments online, Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) said.

Unisys´ CPS is an online portal that enables freight forwarders to interact with multiple carriers via a single website to view availability, make bookings, and track shipments as well as other electronic services such as producing IATA electronic Air Waybills (e-AWB) and interacting with customs systems.

CPS will broaden Air New Zealand Cargo´s reach to the more than 6,000 forwarders and shippers from 3,750 branch offices of 2,200 companies who are active users of CPS, spanning 330 cities in 105 countries.

Air New Zealand Cargo operates more than 590 international flights per week, serving 32 cities in 18 countries around the globe, using the airline´s passenger schedule. Goods range from high technology and time-sensitive goods to fresh produce and general cargo.

Allianz Global Assistance reveals 2017 top 10 domestic, international spring break destinations

Allianz Global Assistance reviewed more than four million trips planned by its customers during the Spring Break season — February 24, 2017 through April 9, 2017 — for travel between five and eight days in length, and found that Orlando and Cancun top the list as this year´s most popular domestic and international destinations, the travel insurance provider said.

Domestically, the results showed that 8.62% of travelers are planning trips to Orlando, followed in popularity by Las Vegas (5.29%), Phoenix (4.38%), Fort Lauderdale (4.13%), Los Angeles (4%), Fort Myers (3.94%), Denver (3.69%), Salt Lake City (3.35%), San Francisco (3.14%), and Tampa (3.04%).

Internationally, travelers are planning trips to Cancun, Mexico (16.73%) followed in popularity by Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (5.27%); San Juan, Puerto Rico (4.84%); Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (4.74%); Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (4.41%); London, United Kingdom (3.95%); Montego Bay, Jamaica (3.16%); Aruba Island, Aruba (2.97%); Nassau, Bahamas (2.85%); and St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands (2.81%).

The findings also showed the most popular flight days for spring break travel in 2017. The travel day with the most travelers (10%) for domestic and international trips is March 11, 2017.

The data of US travelers´ 2017 spring break plans was gathered by analyzing the number of customers that went through the online booking process of airfare and package paths for partners offering Allianz Global Assistance travel insurance to generate itineraries for roundtrip flights from the US from 2/24/2017 — 4/9/2017 for trips between five and eight days in length.

AT&T, China Mobile work together on Internet of Things

AT&T (NYSE: T) and China Mobile have agreed to work together to further enable the Internet of Things (IoT), the companies said.

The deal will help AT&T global business customers connect and deploy their assets and offerings in the Chinese market.

China Mobile covers more than 1.3 billion people with its 4G network, making it the largest 4G network in the world, AT&T said.

SK Telecom tests LTE-advanced 5-band carrier aggregation on its commercial network

SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM) has tested LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) five-band carrier aggregation (CA) on its commercial network, the company said.

Since June 1, 2016, SK Telecom has been providing 500Mbps LTE-A Pro service by applying 256 QAM technology to its tri-band LTE-A CA network. Also, the company has acquired additional spectrum in the 2.6GHz band in May 2017, securing the basis for LTE-A five-band CA.

In addition, SK Telecom has successfully demonstrated the application of MIMO to its tri-band CA network, thereby securing the capability to provide 900Mbps data speeds.

With the application of 4X4 MIMO – a technology that doubles the transmission speed – to a 20MHz bandwidth of a frequency band, users will be able to download data at maximum rate of 400Mbps per frequency band.

Established in 1984, SK Telecom is the largest mobile operator in Korea by both revenue and number of subscribers. As of December 2016, the company holds around 50 percent of the market, with 29.60 million mobile subscribers including 21.1 million LTE subscribers.

United Airlines expands route network

United Airlines is revitalizing its route network with more destinations, more flights, and more convenient connections for customers in both domestic and international markets, the airline said.

Subject to government approval, the carrier will add a seasonal route between San Francisco and Munich for the first time. the flight between San Francisco International Airport and Munich Airport begins on May 24 with service from MUC to SFO returning the next day. The route will be operated with one of the most advanced passenger airplanes, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Beginning May 5, United will operate one of its Newark-Tel Aviv flights with a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, featuring the all new United Polaris seats. This will be the second route — in addition to the carrier´s flights between San Francisco and Hong Kong — that will utilize the brand new Boeing 777-300ER.

In total, United is adding 47 new daily round trips to its domestic schedule. The flights will be on a variety of mainline and regional jets that will add nearly 8,700 additional seats per day and approximately 90,000 new flight miles. These flights are now available for purchase with domestic service beginning as early as June 8. Flights returning to United´s international seasonal summer schedule such as Xi´an, China and Rome are also available.

United Airlines and United Express operate more than 4,500 flights a day to 339 airports across five continents. In 2016, United and United Express operated more than 1.6 million flights carrying more than 143 million customers. The airline operates 737 mainline aircraft and its United Express partners operate 483 regional aircraft, and is a founding member of Star Alliance, which provides service to 192 countries via 28 member airlines.
