US robocalls increase to 2.64bn in August 2016

YouMail Robocall index has reported 2.64 billion robocalls were received by US phones in August, an increase of 9.3 percent over July, the company said.

The new figure for August eclipsed the previous Robocall Index record of 2.5 billion monthly robocalls set in March 2016. The total for August equaled 85.2 million robocalls for each day of the month on average, or 986 robocalls placed every second somewhere in America.

These numbers come from the latest YouMail Robocall Index report and represent data is based on calls blocked and/or reported as spam by YouMail subscribers nationwide.

Texas was the most robocalled state in the US with 298.3 million calls received, followed by California, Florida, New York and Georgia. Americans received an average of 7.6 robocalls per person in August.

Debt collections were the primary cause of US robocalls, with debt collectors making up 17 of the top 20 robocalling phone numbers in August. A national credit card company continues to hold the most active robocalling phone number for the 11th straight month. This single phone number has placed some 364.5 million calls over the past 12 months.
