Quarter of a million miss out on tickets for London 2012

Olympic Stadium, London 2012

A huge total of 20million applications for the Olympics 2012 were made, with just 6.6million seats available. The men’s 100m was one of the most popular with one million applications.

A large majority of money was taken last night, leaving many disappointed. Sports fans have called the ticketing system ‘farcical’ as a record 250,000 people did not receive a single ticket after events were massively oversubscribed.

Applicants have complained that more affluent fans were able to gamble applying for many tickets in the hope of gaining a few tickets. More hard-pressed households could not afford to take the risk:

One disgruntled Twitter user wrote: ‘So no tickets at all for my kids – not for the hockey, the fencing, the canoeing. Motto: Let’s disappoint the nation’s youth.’

The Government applied for 9,000 tickets, including 3,000 for civil servants and other officials involved in bidding and preparing for the Games.

The other 6,000 will be given to dignitaries and VIPs to ‘showcase’ Britain as it hosts the event.

A government spokesman said: ‘Some of the tickets bid for will be made available to officials heavily involved in the London 2012 project, but these will be paid for by them, at face value, and are not freebies at the taxpayers’ expense.’

Matt Bath, of Which? Magazine, said: ‘People didn’t enter into the purchase of tickets for the event with a clear idea of what their odds were, how many tickets were available for each venue and where indeed they would be sitting if they were successful.

‘It’s been called the greatest show on earth but it’s turning into the greatest mystery on earth.’

A second lot of tickets will go on sale later this year – but for less popular events
