UK bus operator FirstGroup announced on Friday that it is helping to raise awareness for cancer support charity Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning campaign, with a donation of advertising space on its buses valued at over GBP145,000.
Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning will raise vital funds for the British charity when thousands of British people host coffee mornings in their homes, offices and communities on Friday 26 September 2014. These funds will help Macmillan Cancer Support continue to provide specialist health care, information and financial support to people affected by cancer. Macmillan also looks at the social, emotional and practical impact that cancer can have, as well as campaigning for better cancer care to improve the lives of everyone living with cancer in the UK.
FirstGroup is supporting Macmillan Cancer Support by advertising the charity’s coffee morning campaign on all of its fleet of 6,400 buses across the UK, which carries around 1.6 million passengers each day in UK communities that include 40 of the country’s largest towns and cities. The company also operates US-style yellow school buses, as well as Greyhound UK, which provides regular intercity coach services linking South Wales and Bristol Airport. A fleet of FirstGroup coaches is also available for charter.
Katie Smart, the company’s Corporate Responsibility and Community Manager, said FirstGroup’s employees overwhelmingly voted Macmillan Cancer Support as its national charity partner in 2012. The company aims is to raise GBP1m in cash and kind by March 2015 and has already raised GBP900,000 so far. Last year more than 40 coffee mornings were held by FirstGroup employees, which raised more than GBP22,000 for Macmillan. The company said that in addition to its donation of advertising space on buses, it hopes to exceed last year’s total with its planned coffee morning events at First depots and offices throughout the UK.
